To an outside observer, Alastair appears to be a very serious and studious young man. He is eloquent and everything he says seems to be very well thought out. He is incredibly intelligent and doesn't allow that to go unnoticed. His attitude occasionally comes off as pretentious and arrogant, but it is usually due to his well-intentioned help getting misinterpreted as bragging.
Sometimes Alastair almost seems too mature, speaking like a man far older than himself. He is frequently composed and collected, keeping his head in a crisis. However, he also fails to emote when people expect that he should. In times of stress or sadness he remains as stoic and composed as any other time. It has likely earned him many robot comparisons, but it doesn't bother him. Which probably doesn't help his case further.
He does notice what people say and how they react to him. Alastair is incredibly perceptive. He knows what people say about him and he knows it's not all good things, but he doesn't care. He knows his own worth and no amount of outside criticism will get in the way of his ambition. He is, in fact, extremely ambitious. Alastair is a perfectionist, but it is simply because he wants to be damn good at everything he does. It bothers him when he cannot pick up on something, so he works at it until he gets it, which includes sleepless nights and a concerning coffee addiction. His pride always wins out over exhaustion.
Though, for all of Alastair's focus on himself, he is incredibly nurturing toward the people he cares for. He will cook and clean for people without being asked, simply to make sure they are eating properly and aren't living in a pigsty. He isn't just obnoxious about cleanliness and eating habits, though. He is incredibly loyal to the people he cares for and would go to bat for them whenever needed. Unless they're super wrong. Then he will scold them in the most loving way possible.
Despite popular belief, Alastair does have a sense of humor, it is simply very dry. So much so, that it is hard to tell that he's joking. He is sarcastic and can come off as condescending when what he said was meant to be a joke. In fact, if it weren't for the slight smile that creeps onto his face after he makes a joke, it would be near impossible to tell he's joking at all.
MOTHER: Melina Selwyn nee Sciarra
FATHER: Robert Selwyn
SIBLING(S): One younger sister
OTHER FAMILY: N/A
There was nothing Alastair Selwyn wanted more than a normal life. Loving parents, siblings, maybe even a white picket fence... a dream from a hopeful boy who was granted almost none of it. For, you see, no one is afforded a normal life when they are born to followers of Lord Voldemort.
The Selwyns were his supporters for as long as anyone could remember. Alastair's father took the mark right out of school, while Alastair's grandfather had been one of those idealistic boys hanging on the older, more charismatic Tom Riddle's every word. Naturally, Alastair was expected to follow suit.
Early on he showed signs of being quiet and studious. Where his father wanted to teach him to ride a broom, Alastair preferred the comforts of the study instead, reading everything he could get his hands on.
Alastair was seven when his younger sister was born. Initially, it didn't phase him. She was a baby and couldn't exactly do much for herself so she drew his parents' attention off of him for the time being. As his parents became more active with the Death Eaters, however, Alastair was left alone with his sister and the occasional ineffectual nanny. It was these times that truly changed him.
Alastair's attitude regarding his sister shifted from indifference to protective. He cared for her, cooking and cleaning when he just as easily could shove the duty off on a house elf. He wanted her to have the best and if he wanted something done right he would have to do it himself. He couldn't even pretend to complain, though. He enjoyed every second of it.
Robert Selwyn was a mean son of a bitch, and Alastair maintains that were he the one to die things would not have gotten as bad as they did. Alas, it was his mother who was killed by the Order of the Phoenix in the summer of 1980. Alastair never had a particularly overactive sense of vengeance, but he couldn't help the resentment that crept up on him when his father told him of the Order and their role in her death. Sensing gullibility and weakness in his son, Robert fed him more lies, gaining his sympathy for the Death Eaters. In the end, Alastair hated the Order.
Losing the war was devastating, but few took it harder than Alastair's father. Alastair managed to shield his sister from Robert's wrath physically, taking to letting her sleep in his room at night, but he knew he couldn't protect her once he went to Hogwarts. He convinced his father to hire a full time nanny to take the burden off of him--one who would live with them and watch for his fierce temper. The one they found was young, pretty, and just out of school. Despite his age, Alexis listened to Alastair's concerns as if they mattered, and the two struck an easy bond and friendship.
He was sorted into Ravenclaw, much to his father's chagrin. Alastair maintains that it was easier to make friends among like minded people than it would have been in Slytherin, though. He masked his hatred for the people who brought an end to the Dark Lord well enough, but he took the path of least resistance and avoided them rather than trying to make nice.
As expected, Alastair excelled at his studies, but it was socially where he struggled. He was small and quiet, so Alastair was an easy target. Defense came in the form of Alexei Yaxley, a boy two years his senior who Alastair knew prior to Hogwarts. Alastair watched as Alexei viciously took down his would-be attackers. Instead of a thank you, Alastair said something else: "teach me".
Alastair had always been a quick study, but even he couldn't have predicted how quickly he took to fighting. Using the training from the dance classes he took when his mother was alive, Alastair became a force to be reckoned with. Graceful and deadly both with knives and a wand. His only rule was that his father could never find out.
Exploring his sexuality came all at once and without warning. His father was away and Delilah was at a friend's house when Alexis kissed him. She was 23, he was only 16. Hormonal and in the presence of a beautiful, half-naked woman, Alastair couldn't find the presence of mind to stop and consider anything wrong with the situation. She was his first, but this wouldn't be the last time they were together. Their trysts would come on hot and heavy, always a secret. She taught him how to please her and, like most things, he was eager to learn.
Being with Alexis was intense and Alastair felt winded every single time, but they weren't a couple. Not officially. After a summer with her, Alastair continued to explore from there. He slept with girls, but his time at Hogwarts was spent exploring what he couldn't at home--boys. His bisexuality was never a question, but rather opportunity was the factor in his ability to experiment. Whenever he was home, his time was split between spending time with his sister and wrapped up in Alexis.
The realization that there might be something wrong came after he left Hogwarts. Now able to spend his time with her and be an official couple, there were things about her that raised red flags. She liked expensive things and she always found ways to make sure that he got them for her. That, in and of itself, was not a problem, but Lexi always knew how to get exactly what she wanted. When the subject of marriage was brought up, Alastair was hesitant, but she was convincing. She picked where he would propose and how he would do it. She knew who would be in their wedding already and where they would live together. She had him thoroughly wrapped up in her vision as she whispered these demands in his ear with her legs wrapped around him. She had been grooming him, even from before she made a move on him, and he had been far too infatuated to see it.
When he was with Alexis, Alastair knew he couldn't say no to her. It was away from her that his logical mind really kicked in. He could only recognize her anger and selfishness when he paused to think. She never gave him a moment to pause and think when they were together, so Alastair went to two of his friends to reason through this potentially dangerous arrangement. Alexei and Nyx both had similar things to say, but by the time they said it, he had already figured it out. She didn't love him--she loved his money.
When he ended things, she tried to change his mind. It almost worked, but he had reasoned out a very valuable piece of ammunition to keep himself on target--she had never cared about Delilah. She kept her safe, sure, but only because of what he could give her. When Delilah went to Hogwarts, Alexis had grown distant from her, and that had been the nail in the coffin.
